Chiang Mai a new city? How can a 712-year-old city be new? Well, it
was new in the year 1296, when a northern prince called Mangrai swept
out of the old kingdom of Yonok on the Mekong and bested Haripunjaya
(now Lamphun), the Mon capital to the south.
He decided to build a grandiose new capital within a square of moats.
Such an ambitious project required a worthy name, and so he called it a
Chiang, or “grand capital”. The Chiang he decided to build, with its
square moat, was new, hence the “Mai”.
KIng Mangrai established a dynasty that was to rule the kingdom of Lanna for
almost 300 years. But time never stands still. Now part of Thailand, Chiang Mai is constantly renewing and reinventing itself.
